When playing a competitive or co-operative multiplayer game in Resistance 2 for PlayStation 3, a bug causes some players' characters to appear as level one characters with no XP, stats or attributes. This bug is just a display bug, and the game hasn't erased any characters' progress. Patch 1.40 for Resistance 2, released on January 26, 2009, fixes this XP saving problem. Resistance 2 automatically prompts you to download the latest patch if your PS3 is connected to the Internet while starting it, but some users might not normally have their consoles connected to the Internet.

Connect your PlayStation 3 to the Internet, if it isn't already connected, by plugging it into your router with a standard Ethernet cable or setup a wireless connection in the "Network Settings" screen in the Settings menu.

Insert the Resistance 2 game disc into your PS3's disc drive.

Restart the PS3 by pressing the power button on its front twice.

Confirm downloading and installation of the latest Resistance 2 patch when you're prompted automatically.
