Change the batteries if it is a wireless remote control. Take the back off the remote and replace the old AA batteries with a set of new batteries. It is possible that all you need to do is change the battery. You also can recharge the remote using the USB cord. Plug one end of the cord into the PS3 console and the other end into the PS3 remote control.
Update the software on your PS3. This is especially important if you purchased the PS3 controller separate from the PS3. The software may be an older version on the PS3; the software should be at least 1.30 or older to work properly. Navigate to the "Settings" section on your PS3. Click on the "System Update" option followed by "Update Via Internet."
Reinstall the remote control. Sometimes the programming can cause the PS3 not to work properly. To fix this issue navigate to "Settings," "Accessory Settings" followed by "BD Remote" on the PS3 menu. A screen will pop up that prompts you to follow the instruction to complete the reprogramming.
