How to Replace a PS3 Bluetooth Chip

One of the key features of Sony's Playstation 3 gaming console is its use of Bluetooth technology. Bluetooth offers a stronger signal than standard RF wireless technology, meaning gamers can use their controllers from farther away and with less likelihood of signal loss. All of the PS3's remotes and game controllers use Bluetooth. Unfortunately, this also means if the Bluetooth board in your PS3 goes bad, your console may be nothing more than an expensive paperweight. If your console is out of warranty, you can replace the Bluetooth board yourself and save the expense of sending it back to Sony for repair.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the power and A/V cables from your PS3. Place it on a table with the front of the console facing you. Use a flat head screwdriver to pry off the black rubber screw cover from the left side of the PS3.

    • 2

Use your Torx T10 screwdriver to remove the screw from the hole on the left side of the console. Slide the PS3 name plate, otherwise known as the smart plate, toward the left of the console to disengage its retaining tabs. Once it has come free of the tabs, lift it up and remove it.

    • 3

Remove the seven screws holding the top cover in place. Lift the top cover up by its back end and slowly pivot it toward the front of the PS3. Once the top cover has come free, set it aside.

    • 4

Remove the two screws holding the memory card reader in place. The memory card reader is located in the front left corner of the PS3. Lift the memory card reader up and locate the ribbon cable connected on the underside of the reader. Flip the latch on the ribbon cable socket and disconnect the ribbon cable. Underneath the memory card reader is the Bluetooth board.

    • 5

Remove the tape holding the memory card ribbon cable to the Bluetooth board and move the cable out of the way. Because the Bluetooth board is also the PS3's wireless adapter, there is a wireless antenna cable connected to the board. Carefully disconnect the cable from the board. Flip the latch on the Bluetooth ribbon cable socket and disconnect the ribbon cable.

    • 6

Remove the four screws holding the Bluetooth board in place. Lift the board straight up to remove from the main PS3 housing.

    • 7

Slide your new Bluetooth board into place and replace the four screws. Reconnect the ribbon cable and wireless antenna cable.

    • 8

Re-assemble your PS3 by reversing the previous steps.
