Insert a PlayStation 2 game into your 80 GB PlayStation 3 console. Turn on the console and see whether the game can be read. If you can play the game, it is compatible. If not compatible, then you will need to fix a few details before proceeding to play. This is just a simple blind test.
Check the generation of your PS3 console. Only first-generation 80 GB PlayStation 3 consoles have backward compatibility. Newer generations had this feature removed to cut down on production cost. You should be able to locate a serial number on the back of your console. Call Sony and talk to a representative to verify the generation of the console if you do not already know it.
Downgrade to an older generation of the 80 GB PlayStation 3 if necessary. While this sounds unappealing, it may be required for you to play your PS2 games. You also gain a few additional features from an older model, such as a Blu-ray player and online movie rental.
Switch to another model of the PS3. This is the final alternative to playing your PS2 games. The first-generation 20 GB and 60 GB both have playback compatibility and can play any PS2 games. They are probably cheaper than your current 80 GB PS3 so you may earn a trade-in bonus.
