Offensive Play
Controlling the ball is very important in "FIFA 08." You must know how to control the player dribbling the ball and make effective passes to open players. Do not hold the sprint button down while dribbling the ball. This will cause the player to move too fast and you will lose possession to the defense. Be sure to take note on the dribbling rankings for each of your players. Some have better ball-handling skills than others, meaning you will have an easier time keeping control of the ball. Quickly change direction with the directional pad or joystick to get open space from the defender and take the shot. Pass the ball to open players often to keep possession of the ball. You can tap the pass button ("S" button) or hold it down to make harder passes. Tapping the pass button again before it reaches its destination will cause that player to make another quick pass.
Playing Defense
In "FIFA 08," the defensive aspect of the game can become very challenging. You must stay with the opposing players as they make a run towards your goal. "FIFA 08" allows you to use a zone formation so players can cover more of the field. Press the player switch button (default "S" button) to switch to the player who's nearest the ball. You can also do this as the ball is passed and you will control the player closet to the destination. Timing allows you to intercept a pass before it reaches the offensive player. When you are near an offensive player, press the "D" button to do a light tackle. These tackles are better to use than slide tackles as you reduce the chance of a penalty card or free kick. However, slide tackles are more successful at removing the ball from the player.
Scoring Opportunities
Taking open shots is the key to scoring goals in "FIFA 08." Your front-line players have the best abilities to get open and quickly shoot the ball. Pressing the "D" button will cause the player to shoot the ball. How hard you hold the button will affect the power behind the shot. Another way to score goals is by using lob or technique shots. Lob shots are done by pressing the "Z" and "D" buttons simultaneously. These shots have a chance to surprise the goalie by going over his head. Technique shots are done when you press "Q" and "D" together. These shots change direction and can confuse the goalie. Also, take the time to practice free kicks so you can make the most of the scoring opportunities that may arise during gameplay.
