How to Upgrade a PS3 Hard Drive to Play PS2 Games

The PlayStation 3 can be purchased with a variety of different hard drives. Some of the more expensive PS3s come with larger hard drives that are capable of storing more information and even playing PS2 games. However, you may be frustrated if you own one of the more basic PS3s, as these are not capable of playing PS2 disks. You can remove the hard drive in your PS3 and replace it with one that allows you to play PS2 disks in your PS3 console.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert a memory stick into the port in the front of your PS3 and follow the prompts on screen to backup any important information you would like to save before you upgrade the hard drive.

    • 2

Turn your PS3 off and unplug the unit from its power source.

    • 3

Use the tip of your Phillips-head screwdriver to pop off the rectangular panel located on the side of the unit and expose the hard drive cover.

    • 4

Remove the single blue screw securing the hard drive cover. Then slide the metal latch above the screw to the right to unlock the cover.

    • 5

Pull the latch to the right while simultaneously sliding the hard drive tray out of the unit.

    • 6

Remove the four screws on each corner of the metal hard drive tray and slide the actual hard drive out of the tray. Then slide a PlayStation 3 hard drive that is compatible with PS2 games (available from your PlayStation retailer or online) into the tray and replace the screws. Slide the hard drive in the unit, replace the compartment cover and you're done.
