How Do I Download Games on My PS3 for Free?

Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3) console introduced the PlayStation Network (PSN). This online network includes the PlayStation Store. Through the PlayStation Store, PS3 users can download content, such as games and movies, directly to the system's hard drive. Most content must be purchased with a credit card. The only free content available is demos of games, and add-ons for previously purchased games. Demos are condensed, preview versions of games players can try before paying for the full version. Add-ons are bonus materials for games, and are usually for fun, and not essential to game play.

Connect to the Playstation Store

  Turn on your console and make sure it is connected through an Ethernet or wireless Internet connection. Sign into the PlayStation Network. If you have not already created a PSN account, complete the simple sign-up process.

  Access the PlayStation Store by scrolling to the PlayStation Network tab on the Cross Media Bar. Scroll down to highlight the PlayStation Store icon, and press "X." Allow the PlayStation Store to load.

  Scroll down the side menu and highlight "Demos" and press "X." Choose "PS3 Demos" and press "X." Browse the available demos alphabetically. Decide which demo you want to download, highlight it, and press "X."

  Review the game information, then highlight "Download" and press "X." You can begin the download now, or continue shopping. To begin the download, press "X."

  Wait for the download to complete. Choose to "Download in Background" if you want to access other PS3 features while waiting. Check the status of the download by accessing the Network tab on the Cross Media Bar, then select "Download Management."

  Restart the console once the download is complete. Access your demo by selecting the "Game" tab on the Cross Media Bar, then scroll down until you locate the game.
