How to Troubleshoot a Guitar for Rock Band PS3

The Rock Band guitar controller uses colored fret buttons and a strum button to give video game players a taste of rock stardom as they strum along to songs by AC/DC, the Beatles and other popular artists on the PlayStation 3. Occasionally, a guitarist may experience performance issues while playing the game. Often this is because of a problem with the connection between the guitar and the game system, though audio/visual synchronization and product defects can cause problems as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure that your PS3 is properly connected to your home theater setup and insert the Rock Band game disc into the console.

    • 2

Plug the guitar's wireless signal adapter into a USB port on the front of your PS3 and press the small button on the adapter. If the red LED light on the signal adapter does not come on, try plugging it into a different USB port. Do not place any devices that may interfere with the wireless signal near the adapter, such as cell phones.

    • 3

Turn the switch on the back of your guitar to "On" and press the "PS" button on the front of the guitar if the wireless adapter is working properly. If the LED lights around the "PS" button do not come on, insert new batteries to the guitar's battery case.

    • 4

Activate "Game" mode in your TV's menu if you are using a high-end HDTV. This will help alleviate problems with audio/visual lag times, which can cause you to miss notes during the game.

    • 5

Select "Calibrate System" from the game's "Options" menu. Follow the onscreen instructions to calibrate and fine-tune the audio/visual lag times. Adjust the lag calibration until the video and sound are properly synchronized.

Contact EA's Rock Band support page if you suspect your guitar may be defective. Some Rock Band guitars suffer from a defect that can cause the guitar to double-strum or miss notes, particularly during fast-paced sections in "Expert" mode. See Resources for EA's support website.
