Backwards Compatible Models
Only three PS3 models currently offer backwards compatibility support. The CECHB01 with the 20GB hard drive and the CECHA01 with the 60GB hard drive that were the original launch consoles in November 2006 came standard with backwards compatibility. The 80GB CECHE01 that launched in August 2007 also came with backwards compatibility. If your PS3 is any of those, then it is capable of playing all PS2 and PS1 games. Subsequent PS3 models dropped backwards compatibility. The two PS3 models currently in production, the 120GB CECH-2001A and the 250GB CECH-2001B, do not offer backwards compatibility.
PlayStation Network Games
Currently, the PlayStation network offers a catalog of PS1 games that can be downloaded and played on the PS3 system. The only currently available game that was seen on the PS2 is Tekken 5. Tekken 5 can be downloaded via the PlayStation Network and is based off of the arcade version of Tekken 5, also available on the PSP, which is an update of the PS2 version of Tekken 5. The PS3 version also supports 1080p video output.
God of War Collection
The only PS2 game to be re-released on the PS3 is the God of War Collection. Released in November 2009, the God of War Collection features God of War and God of War II on Blu-ray disc remastered in high definition. Video support is upgraded to 720p and PlayStation Network Trophies are supported. This collection is meant to build the hype for the upcoming God of War III, which is set for release in March 2010.
