In the online version of the game, players are given a statistic during each contest called the "Kill / Death Ratio" which tells them how skilled they are at playing the game. The ratio is calculated by taking the amount of people you've killed and dividing it by the amount of times you have been killed by others. A Kill / Death Ratio of 3, for example, means that for every time you died, you killed three people. If you have a ratio over 1, you have killed more people than you yourself have died. If you have a ratio under 1 (for example, 0.40) then others have killed you more than you have killed them.
To get and maintain a higher Kill / Death Ratio, you can do a few things. Playing weaker competition in general will allow you to win more battles and pump your Kill / Death Ratio up.
Another practice, which is generally frowned upon in online game play, is getting to a position on the game field where opposing characters "spawn" or come back to life after dying. If you find a safe spot near there, you can hold your position (or "camp") and simply kill opponents before they have a chance to counter-attack.
