"Downloading Game Settings"
One of the most common problems seems to occur when searching for a game or accepting an invitation to one. At this point, luckless players will see the text "Downloading Game Settings." Infinity Ward's fix for this problem involves disconnecting and reconnecting your router then reconnecting to PSN. If you need more detailed instructions, view the resource "Guide to Clear Downloading Game Settings for the PS3".
Port Forwarding
If disconnecting and reconnecting your router fails to solve the "Downloading Game Settings" problem, you may have to resort to port forwarding, a process which will open more communication ports, thus increasing your PS3's connectivity. The guide titled "Putting your PS3 in a DMZ," will walk you through this process
Lag
Many CoD4 players have complained about lag and connection errors, which can impair hit detection and result in player death or disconnection. Unfortunately, other than ensuring that your connection is good, there is little you can do, since the peer to peer hosting system means a game can only run as smoothly as the host's connection allows.
Hacks
Hacks and glitches have also been exploited by a substantial number of CoD4 players. One of the more prolific hacks, called the UFO hack, allowed players to move about the map irrespective of gravity, or even solid objects, but was addressed by patches. Players have also reported hackers taking advantage of unlimited numbers of grenades and RPGs and even of using grenades that exploded on impact. Other hackers found ways to exploit the leaderboards, but many of them have since had their stats reset by Infinity Ward.
If you are frequently encountering hackers, you may attempt to contact Infinity Ward through their forums. Unfortunately, the company is unlikely to take action unless a problem is particularly pervasive.
Other Issues
Two other known issues include Error 33, which results from a player's inability to connect to the Activision Matchmaking Server and a Sniper/ACOG Scope Issue which causes lined up shots to miss their targets. If you are experiencing an issue the PS3 subforum for CoD4 can help you troubleshoot and answer challenging questions.
