PlayStation 3 60GB Vs. PlayStation 3 40GB

The Sony PS3 is one of the most popular gaming consoles on the market. Like its competitors, it offers users the ability to play DVDs, network with other users and, of course, play games. Sony catered to its customer base by introducing a number of different models, such as the PS3 40 GB and PS3 60 GB.
  1. History

    • The Sony PlayStation 3 was first introduced into the marketplace in 2007. Its immediate competitors are the Nintendo Wii and Microsoft's Xbox 360. The PlayStation 3 was the first gaming console to make use of the high-definition Blu-ray standard for multimedia storage.

    Differences From Earlier PlayStations

    • One of the main aspects that sets the PlayStation 3 apart from earlier models is the addition of the PlayStation Network. The PlayStation Network allows users to connect their PS3s to an online gaming community across the world to communicate, network and play games. The Network also allows users to create an online avatar, or virtual personality. Sony also introduced Network Cards, which allow users to earn points and purchase virtual rewards.

    Identification

    • The main way to tell the models apart externally is by the case color. The PS3 40 GB comes in a variety of colors, including black, white, silver and gray, while the PS3 60 GB is available only in black.

    Features--PlayStation 60 GB

    • The PS3 60 GB comes equipped, as its model name implies, with a 60 GB hard drive. It is backward-compatible with the earlier PS2 models, allowing users to play games from that platform. For external connections, it has four USB ports, accepts compact flash drive formats and comes with an Ethernet port. A wireless 802.11/bg wireless connection comes built into the machine.

    Features--PlayStation 40 GB

    • The PS 40 GB, unlike the 60 GB, is not backward-compatible with earlier PlayStation models. At 40 GB, its hard drive is a full 33 percent smaller than the 60 GB model. It lacks the built-in Ethernet port that the 60 GB model has, but it does come with built-in 802.11/bg wireless capability. The 40 GB doesn't accept any kind of flash cards like the 60 GB does, and it comes with only two USB ports.

    Considerations

    • The PS3 40 GB and the PS3 60 GB are no longer produced by Sony.

    Which Is Better?

    • With its larger hard drive, better connectivity and backward compatibility with earlier PS2 models, the PS3 60 GB is definitely the better bargain.
