Learn the control scheme. Your left analog stick is what steers your vehicle. The R2 button is your accelerator and the L2 button is your brake. If you are in manual mode, the R1 and L1 buttons shift up and down. The circle button brings up your rear view mirror. The square button brings up your VTV, or vehicle telemetry visor. The triangle button switches your camera view and the "X" button activates voice chat when you play online.
Use the SIXAXIS motion-sensing controller to steer. This is one of the things you can only experience on the PlayStation 3 version of NASCAR 08, and without spending the money on a racing wheel, it can get you closer to the feeling of being behind the wheel. Set your control settings to use the SIXAXIS motion sensing for steering. You can then tilt the controller left and right to turn your vehicle. Be aware that the cars naturally drift left slightly, so you will have to keep the controller tilted slightly right to compensate, or you can change the settings to straighten out your vehicle's tires.
Get familiar with your VTV. The VTV shows you all of the pertinent information you need to know about your vehicle, like current MPH, oil temperature and pressure, water temperature and tire wear. You can also see your current lap and position plus your split times. There is also a heads-up display, or HUD, you can choose to view a less detailed description of your vehicle as well as a map of the current course.
Set your car settings. It is important to tune your control settings in NASCAR 08 to yourself for optimum performance. Because of the degree of sensitivity in the controls, you need to make sure that your car is handling how you want it to. Play a single race or use a practice mode to get your car settings right.
Pick your race mode. The season mode will let you play through a NASCAR season as your favorite driver. You can instead choose the Chase, which will let you start from the ground up and compete to earn licenses, contracts and cars that you can use to complete the NASCAR season. The Toyota Racing mode lets you compete in mini-game challenges and tune your car. You can also choose a single race or to race online.
