Getting Started
Start up your PlayStation3 and load your Guitar Hero game.
Familiarize yourself with the layout of the buttons on the guitar controller. To play songs on Easy difficulty you'll only need to use the first three buttons (Green, Red and Yellow). As you progress to higher difficulties you'll need to incorporate the Blue and Orange buttons, too.
Sit in a position that's comfortable and allows you to operate the guitar controller with ease. If you're really going to rock out, stand up and clear some floor space so you have room to move.
Quick Play
Use the strum bar to scroll down the main screen until "Quick Play" is highlighted. Then, press the Green button.
Select your difficulty level. Easy and Medium are both good settings for beginners, depending on general skill and coordination. Hard and Expert offer much more of a challenge and should be the default choice for experienced players.
Scroll down the Setlist and choose the song you'd like to play.
Select your song by pressing the Green button.
Watch the scrolling fretboard and play the buttons on the controller that correspond with the colored circles on the screen. Make sure you stroke the strum bar as you press the button or the note won't register.
Check your performance stats at the end of the song before playing another one.
Career Mode
Select "Career" from the main menu.
Create your band. Simply select "New Band" and enter your band's name.
Choose your difficulty level.
Select the venue where your band will play. More venues become available as you progress through the songs.
Pick a song to play. Tunes toward the bottom of the Setlist are generally more difficult to play, so if you're a beginner stick with ones near the top (you'll have to unless someone else has already unlocked the harder ones).
Play the song just as you would in Quick Play Mode. Focus on coordinating your strumming and button-pressing. Rhythmic accuracy is also important, so don't be afraid to tap your foot or nod your head to stay in sync with the beat.
Conquer all the songs in your difficulty level to win the game.
