CSO File Types

Optical media has a finite shelf life, so it is important to back up discs in case your originals become scratched or otherwise unreadable. If you have a PlayStation Portable game system then you can create or download backup copies of your games in the compressed CSO file format. You can only legally obtain a CSO file for a game that you already own.
  1. Definition

    • The CSO file extension stands for compressed ISO disk image. A CSO file is an archive file that contains a copy of a Playstation Portable game disc. Although the data in a CSO file is functionally equivalent to the data on the original disc, a CSO file is compressed so that the data takes up less hard drive space.

    Types of Compression

    • When you create a CSO file format, you can choose to employ up to nine levels of compression. The more levels of compression, the less disk space the image file takes up. However, increased levels of compression also result in greater load times when playing a game. Even with just a few levels of compression, you can compress most games to a fraction of their original size.

    Creation

    • You can create a CSO file from a PlayStation Portable game disc using a number of image creation applications. Windows users can choose from several applications including CisoPlus!, PSP ISO Compressor, UMDGen and YACC. Mac users have much more limited options, but they can create CSO files using an application called Prometeus.

    Legality

    • The contents of a PlayStation Portable game disc are subject to copyright laws in the United States and most other jurisdictions. If you create or download a copy of a PlayStation Portable disc that you don't own, you may be in violation of the game maker's copyright; if you are prosecuted this could result in both fines and jail time. In most locales, it is legal to create or download a backup copy of a game disc if you own an original copy of the game.
