Learning the World Map Spell
Unlike recent "Final Fantasy" games, you do not start out with a world map in "Final Fantasy," nor are you given one by any character. However, you do not have to be without a world map for long. After defeating Garland in the first hour of the game, the northern bridge is rebuilt. After crossing the bridge, travel to the northwest corner of the continent to reach Matoya's Cave. Inside of the cave are numerous brooms that repeat the same riddle: "Front-words, back-wards, any way you see! Tceles Nottub Hsad." At first glance, this appears to be nonsense, but in actuality, it is the code to the world map.
Accessing the World Map
To solve the broom's riddle, read the phrase "Tceles Nottub Hsad" right to left, or hold your PSP up to a mirror. The phrase now reads "Select Button Dash," which is the button combination, or "spell," to access the world map. To use it, you must be on the overworld -- the location that you are taken to outside of a city or dungeon. Hold down the dash button, which is "Circle" on the PSP and press the "Select" button. The world map appears on your screen. You can access the world map as many times as you wish as long as you are on the overworld screen. To exit the world map, press the "Circle" button.
Understanding the World Map
Upon opening the world map, you are presented with the map on the left side of the screen and a list of locations on the right. These locations are places you have visited, and their locations are displayed on the map. All the locations in the game, whether visited or not, are displayed on the map as yellow squares. While the name is not displayed for locations you have not yet found, the map is useful for figuring out where to go when you are given a direction, such as "Travel west." The blue blinking cursor is your position, and your ship is displayed as a blinking yellow cursor when you receive it.
Accessing the World Map in Other "Final Fantasy" Games
"Final Fantasy Anniversary Edition" on the PSP continues the long tradition of hiding the map as a button combination. However, each system "Final Fantasy" is on features a different button combination due to different controllers being used. On the original version for the NES, you hold the "B" button and press "Select." On the iPhone version of the game, the code is different because the system doesn't have any buttons. Do not move your characters until the status screen in the lower right corner appears. Press and hold your finger on the status screen to display the world map.
