What Does Feng Shui Mean in The Sims 2?

"The Sims 2" by Maxis and Electronic Arts is a life simulation game where characters create characters known as "Sims" and follow them through their daily lives. Originally for PC, the game proved popular enough to bring it to consoles such as the PlayStation 2, Xbox and Nintendo GameCube. A portable version was created for handheld consoles as well, though the PlayStation Portable, or PSP, version contained a new feature known as "feng shui."
  1. Building and Decorating

    • One of the main activities in Sims 2 is building a home for your Sim and decorating it to meet the character's needs. This is done through the "Build" interface in the game, a gameplay mode that pauses the main game while you purchase walls, flooring, furniture and other decorative items to make a truly custom structure. Once the building is complete and decorated to your specifications, you can switch back to the live gameplay mode to interact with your Sim directly.

    Feng Shui Problems

    • Once you have a certain amount of items in your Sim's house, a message may appear when you attempt to make additional item purchases saying that the new item would ruin your home's feng shui. When this message appears, you have reached your feng shui limit; this limitation is based on the amount of space that your items require and how much they cost. Once this limit is reached, you cannot make any more purchases.

    Overcoming Feng Shui

    • The only way to overcome feng shui in Sims 2 is to remove one or more items from your Sim's home. Once items have been removed, new items and decorations can be purchased and placed in or around the home. To avoid problems placing essential items such as beds and entertainment pieces, players should decorate by placing these items first and adding smaller decorations and non-essential pieces afterward.

    Reason for Feng Shui

    • Feng shui is not present in other versions of Sims 2. Due to the limited processing power and save-space available for the PSP version of the game, feng shui was implemented as a means to limit the number of items used as decoration by players. By placing this limitation in the game, the developers eliminated the possibility of players adding more items to a residence than the image software for the game was capable of displaying effectively.
