Weapons
The strongest overall weapons available are the Onion Sword, Chaos Sword and Valhalla. These weapons have very strict requirements, however; the Chaos Sword is limited to Knights and Dark Knights, the Onion Sword is limited to Onion Knights and the Valhalla can only be equipped by Dark Knights. Of these, the Valhalla is the most devastating, granting the wielder a chance to instantly kill the target. Of Shields, which "Final Fantasy Tactics" classifies as a type of Weapon, the best are the Escutcheon and the Onion Shield. The former is available to any character trained in shields, while the latter is restricted to Onion Knights only.
Headgear
The Knight, Dragoon, Samurai and Dark Knight can equip helms, while every other class uses hats. The best helms are the Grand Helm and Onion Helm, the latter of which is, like all Onion gear, restricted to the Onion Knight. The best hats for speedy characters such as ninjas or archers is the Acacia helm, which increases the wearer's speed. For spell casters, the Gold Hairpin not only provides excellent hit-point and magic-point bonuses, but also makes the wearer immune the Silence, the crippling status effect that prevents spell casts.
Armor
Knights, Dragoons and Samurai enjoy the extra protection granted by armor, while other classes must make do with clothing. The best armor is the Maximilian and the Mirror Mail. While Maximilian is the stronger of the two by far, Mirror Mail grants the wearer the ability to automatically reflect spells back on the caster. This extra protection can make a huge difference against powerful enemy spell casters. For clothing, the Brave Suit not only provides good protection, but also grants the user the ability sometimes to come back from the dead if defeated. For spell casters looking for clothing to boost their magic, the Sage's Robe and Lordly Robe provide the best statistics. While the Sage's Robe is the less effective of the two, it has the additional benefit of halving all damage received from magic, an essential benefit for some encounters.
Accessories
For characters needing the best mobility, the Germinas Boots provide both increased movement and jump. The Red Shoes trade the jump bonus for increased magic power, ideal for spell casters. Mages will also want to equip the Magepower Glove for increased spell power, while physical fighters will enjoy the Bracer for enhanced damage. Hybrid characters using both magic and weapons should turn to the Genji Glove, which benefits both schools of combat. The Featherweave Cloak offers the best evasion of all cloaks. Lastly, female characters can equip perfumes to grant special abilities. The perfume Chantage can resurrect the wearer if she dies in combat.
Consumables
The best restoratives are the X-Potion, which restores 150 hit points, and the Hi-Ether, which restores 50 magic points. The Holy Water heals the Undead and Vampire status effect, while Remedy heals everything else. You can restore dead characters to life with the Phoenix Down, and fully restore a character's life and magic with the rare Elixir. For ninjas looking for a good throwing item, the Yagyu Darkrood is the strongest shuriken around.
