How to Fix a Scratched UMD

A Universal Media Disc (UMD) is a playable disc that was created by Sony for use in the PlayStation Portable (PSP) handheld video game device. It is similar in appearance to a CD or DVD but smaller, and it can hold as much as or more content than a disc twice the size. Just like a CD or DVD, a UMD is susceptible to scratches. Repairing these scratches yourself is possible, ensuring that you can play your favorite game again.

Instructions

    • 1

Rinse the UMD under a cool stream of water from the tap. This will remove any dirt or debris that has settled inside the scratches, making them worse.

    • 2

Dry the surface of the UMD with a soft cloth by beginning in the center of the disc and working your way outward in forward strokes. Do not touch the reflective surface at the center of the disc with the cloth.

    • 3

Dip the corner of a soft cloth into metal polish, such as Brasso.

    • 4

Work the metal polish into the surface of the UMD by beginning at the center and wiping the disc outward toward the edges in a straight-line motion. Once again, do not rub or touch the center reflective area.

    • 5

Allow the metal polish to dry for 5 to 10 minutes, then rinse the UMD under a cool stream of water.

    • 6

Dry the UMD with a soft cloth, using the same wiping motion.
