Instructions
Navigate to the Quickjump gaming network site and download the latest version of IR Shell. Right-click on the downloaded file and choose "Extract All" to unzip the contents of the archive. You will end up with three folders, "IRSHELL," "PSP" and "SEPLUGINS."
Connect your PSP to your PC using a mini-USB cable. Hold down "Ctrl" and click on all three folders so they are highlighted. Right-click anywhere while "Ctrl" is still held down and select "Copy," then right-click on the root folder of the PSP memory stick and select "Paste." If you are asked if you want to overwrite the file "vsh.txt" in the "SEPLUGINS" folder, select "No." If this file is present, you already have other plug-ins installed on your PSP. Instead, right-click on the file, select "Edit" and then add the line "ms0:/seplugins/irsautoboot.prx 1" before saving and closing.
Navigate to the PSP-hacks website and click the download link to a free skin pack for IR Shell. Extract and copy this to the "Skins" folder of the "IRSHELL" folder in the root of the PSP memory stick if you want to change the look of the program. This is purely optional, and you can use IR Shell without using any new skins.
Disconnect the PSP from the PC and start it up in recovery mode. This will differ, depending on what version of custom firmware your PSP is running. The "Gen" custom firmware, for example, requires you to hold down the right trigger button of the PSP when switching it on to access the recovery menu. Check the documentation of your version to see how to access it or use the instructions on pspcustomfirmware.com to install the "GEN-C" firmware.
Use the direction pad on the PSP to scroll down to "Plugins," then press "X" to enter the menu. Set the irsautoboot.prx plug-in to "Enabled." This will start up the IR Shell program every time your PSP is switched on.
Restart your PSP and it will boot directly into the "IR SHELL" menu. You will see a list of different icons. Highlighting one of the icons will display its function at the bottom of the menu. Select the first icon that looks like a house to access the directory view. This will show the contents of the PSP memory card.
Navigate to the "IRSHELL" folder in the root of the memory card, then enter the "Patch" directory. Inside this folder will be a group of folders with names that correspond to the version number of your custom firmware. Enter the folder that matches the firmware you have installed; for example, if your custom firmware is version 5.00, you will enter the "5.00" folder.
Press "X" on the btcnfpatch.prx file and select "Yes" when asked if you want to launch the application. You will be told that the update is successful and the PSP will automatically reboot when you press "X." What this update does is enable your PSP to play backup copies of your legal games that are in the "ISO" format, as well as run Playstation 1 games.
From the bottom row of icons in the "IR Shell" menu, select the "Configurator" option. This will allow you to customize the program to your liking. You can change a variety of settings here, such as overclocking your PSP, but if you are not sure what a setting does, refer to the IR Shell documentation first before making any changes. The user guide will be included with the program download or can be found on the Freedrive website.
Select the "MP3 View" icon from the "IR Shell" menu to show the music folder on your memory stick. You can press "X" on a song to play it or highlight a directory of songs with the "O" button to play all the songs in the folder in sequence.
Press the "Launch UMD" button to start a PSP game disc that is inserted in the UMD drive. Select the "APP View" button to show a list of homebrew games on your memory stick and press "X" to run them.
