How to Make Your Own PSP Gameboot

Customizing the game boot screen on your PSP will allow you to incorporate your own video clip upon game startup. Normally, the PSP boot screen is about four seconds long. Customization will allow you to import a new clip -- up to 20 seconds long -- of any video you want. To create your own boot screen, you will need to download a few programs and convert your video and audio files to the proper format.

Instructions

    • 1

Download the PSP game boot from the Megaupload website (see Resources) by clicking "Regular Download." Open the file and save it onto your desktop. There should be six separate folders with an .exe file.

    • 2

Design the video you would like to incorporate as part of your PSP boot screen. You can also download a short clip from the Internet. Once you have your video, save it to your desktop. The video must not exceed 20 seconds in length.

    • 3

Open the WinMenc folder and run the winmenc.exe. Select "Add files" and locate your video clip and press "Open." Select "Load profile" and select PSP.avi from your downloaded files.

    • 4

Select the "Video" tab and change the video frames to 29.970 from the "Video Frames" drop-down. Select "Audio" and choose "No audio" from the drop-down.

    • 5

Minimize the Winmenc screen and create a new folder on your desktop called "Winmenc Converted" Maximize the window again and select "Output Folder" and choose "Winmenc Converted" as the destination folder. Press "Encode" to start the process of stripping the audio from the video. You must create two separate files to use in your boot screen, the audio and the video. The next step is to strip the audio.

    • 6

Select the "Audio" tab and choose "MP3" from the drop-down menu called "Audio codec." Go to the "Video" tab and select "No video" from the "Video codec" drop-down menu. Select "encode" to separate the audio. Exit the Winmenc application. Your folder called "Winmenc Converted" should now have two separate files: one audio and one video.

    • 7

Open "Virtual Dub" from your original download folder. Run virtualdub.exe to start the program. Select "File" to open the video file saved in your "Winmenc Converted" folder. Save the video as an AVI format by selecting "File" and "Save As AVI." Rename the file so you know it is the converted version. Close the program.

    • 8

Choose "Audio Converter" from the original download folder and run audioconverter.exe Follow the onscreen instructions to install the converter and then run the trial version. Select "Add" to add your audio file from "Winmenc Converted." Next select the "WAV" from the drop-down menu titled "Output Format." Set the conversion directory to your converted folder. Press "Start" to convert the file.

    • 9

Open your "Winmenc Converted" folder and delete the two old video and audio files. You should now have two files: one WAV file and one AVI file.

    • 10

Open UMB Stream Composer from the original download folder. Select "Bin" and then run the UMB Stream Composer program. Select "New" and name the project anything you want. Select "Next" and enter "4 MB" as the max clip size. Check the box for PSP Movie Format and select "Finish." Select "Video Source" and "Open" to locate your converted video clip. Click "OK" to open the clip. Select "Audio Source" to open your audio file the same way.

    • 11

Move the green arrow at the top of the timeline to the right so it ends where the video clip ends. Select "Run" and then "Encode + Multiplex" from the drop-down. Wait until the encoding process finishes and close the program.

    • 12

Locate the file under "My Documents" in the "UMB Stream" folder. Rename the file called "001.mps" to "gameboot.mps." Copy the file and paste it into the folder called "MPS-PMF" in the subfolder called "Gameboot."

    • 13

Open the "Gameboot converter" and the file will automatically be converted and placed in the folder as "gameboot.pmf"

    • 14

Plug in your PSP and locate the folder "vsh" then "Resource" to import the new boot screen. Copy "gameboot.pmf" and paste it into the folder. Choose to replace the existing file. Your game boot screen will now be customized.
