How to Convert a DVD to a UMD

The Sony PlayStation Portable, or PSP, uses a video format known as UMD, universal media disc, for all of its video files. This means that unless media is in the UMD format, the PSP will be unable to play or recognize it. Converting a DVD to UMD format is a three-step process in which the DVD is ripped to the computer and the resulting file converted into something that your PSP will understand.

Instructions

Rip the DVD

  Download and install MagicISO Maker (see Resources). This is a free DVD ripping utility that also has a file format converter.

  Open MagicISO Maker by clicking "Start" and typing "MagicISO Maker" into the Search field. Double-click MagicISO Maker to begin.

  Click "Tools" and select "Make ISO from CD/DVD ROM".

  Select your CD/DVD-ROM drive in the "Source" drop-down. Under "Outup Format," select "Standard ISO image file".

  Click the folder next to "Output File" and select an easy to remember location like your Windows Desktop.

  Click "OK" to convert.
Convert to AVI

  Click "Tools" in MagicISO Maker and select "Convert".

  Click the folder next to "Choose Source File" and locate the ISO file you ripped earlier.

  Select "AVI" on the "Choose Output Format" drop-down menu.

  Click "Convert."
Convert to UMD

  Download and install OJOsoft Total Video Converter (see Resources).

  Open OJOsoft Total Video Converter by clicking the "Start" button and typing "Total Video Converter" into the Search field. Double-click the software to begin.

  Click "Browse" and select the AVI file you created in the second section of this guide.

  Click the "To MP4" button to choose the output format.

  Click the "MP4" drop-down and select the PSP video format appropriate for your PSP version.

  Click "Convert" to start the conversion process.
