Specifications
The UMD is an optical disc format, much like a DVD, only smaller--60 mm in diameter. A single-layer UMD can hold 0.9 GB of data, while a dual-layer UMD can hold 1.8 GB. Audio and video stored on the media may encoded using either the ATRAC3plus or MPEG4AV codecs. It also supports PCM stereo sound. The format is owned by Sony.
Uses
As of August 2010, the original PSP is the only device that supports the UMD mini format. Other versions of the PSP released since the original have forgone UMD support for digital distribution of games and video.
Support
When the PSP first launched, multiple studios showed support for the UMD mini format, and many major theatrical releases were released on the format. Slow sales of the PSP and UMD movies have slowed down support for the format. As of August 2010, the only major studio that sill shows extensive support for the UMD mini as a movie medium is Sony.
