How to Play Arcade Games on the PSP

The Sony PSP is a gaming device that can be homebrew hacked to play both PSP and ROM games. Homebrew hacking is the term used to describe unlocking a PSP so that it will run user-created games and applications such as emulators. Emulators are homebrew applications that run ROM games, which are digital game files created from console cartridges that are no longer produced. The PSP supports several different emulators made specifically for the PSP, including the MAME emulator. The MAME emulator is designed to play classic arcade games, and can be loaded onto any homebrew-hacked Sony PSP.

Instructions

  Homebrew hack your PSP using the correct version of ChickHen for your PSP model and firmware. Download ChickHen and extract it to the root directory of your PSP. Follow the downloaded file's included instructions for installing that specific version of ChickHen for your PSP model.

  Download the xMAME emulator for PSP.

  Connect the PSP to your computer with a USB cable. Navigate to "Start", then "My Computer" and click on the drive that says "Removable Drive." Locate the folder called "PSP," then "GAME."

  Extract the xMAME app into the "GAME" folder by right-clicking the xMAME folder, selecting "Extract to," and choosing the "GAME" folder from the list that appears.

  Download the ROM files of the arcade games you want and save them to your computer's desktop. There are many websites to download arcade ROMs. To find them, enter "Game Name + ROM" into a search engine.

  Double-click on the xMAME folder, then on the "ROMS" folder. Copy and paste your arcade ROMs into the "ROMS" folder.

  Disconnect the PSP from your computer and restart it. Navigate to the "Memory Stick" menu option on the PSP and select the xMAME emulator from the list. The ROMs you loaded into the ROMs folder will appear as games. Select a game to play it.
