How to Get Broken PS2 Games to Work

Even with the most careful treatment, PS2 game discs can become scratched. Scratches cause problems such as skipping audio and video crashing, and in some cases the disc may not read at all. You can fix your broken game as long as there are no scratches on the label side of the disc. Once the scratches are gone, you'll be playing your game again.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe the game disc with a soft microfiber cloth to remove any fingerprints or dust. Test it by trying to play the game. Some games only require cleaning to work properly.

    • 2

Check the surface of the disc for scratches by holding it so that light reflects off the surface. If you can see scratches, hold it up so a light shines behind the disc. If you see light through the surface of the disc, the scratch cannot be fixed and the game is ruined. Other scratches can be buffed out.

    • 3

Lay a soft cloth on a flat surface and place the disc on top, label side down. Squeeze a small amount of toothpaste on the surface of the disc.

    • 4

Rub the surface of the disc with a soft cloth. Rub from the edge to the center and vice versa in straight lines. Keep rubbing until the scratch is gone.

    • 5

Rinse the disc with water and dry it with a cloth.
