Familiarize yourself with the PlayStation 2's digital directional pad, located on the left side of the controller, and the left and right analog sticks, which are located on the lowest portion of the face of the controller. The directional pad is used to cycle through options in the map screen, which is accessible by pressing the "Back" button in the middle of the controller. The left analog stick is the most frequently used button in this game as it is what you use to move your character within the game's environment. The right analog stick is used to equip your wand and to cast spells.
Identify the four main action buttons of the game, which are on the right portion of the controller and are all accessible by your right thumb. The "A" button is a speed-oriented button. If you hold down the "A" button while walking, it will cause your character to run, and tapping the "A" button while climbing causes you to do so at a faster pace. The B button is your point-of-view control. Tap the "B" button to center the camera and hold it down to switch to a first-person perspective. The "Y" button is simply used to equip your wand. Use the "X" button for environment interaction. Press the "X" button when facing a person to talk to her or when facing a door or object to create action within the game.
Familiarize yourself with the four buttons located on the opposing side of the controller that faces your television. The top set of triggers are used to cycle between objects or opponents if your character is equipped with the wand. Use the top left trigger to cycle left and the right one to cycle right. The lower set of trigger buttons are called the bumper buttons. The left one has no purpose in this game, so do not concern yourself with it. Hold down the right bumper to aim your wand at another character and focus its magical abilities on him.
Look at the very center of the controller and note the "Back" and "Start" buttons. These are option controls and not action or directional controls. Press the "Back" button to pull up your map to see your location within the video game's environment. The "Start" button is used to pause the game. Once the game is paused you can select different options or perform a manual save.
