How to Save a PS2 Memory Card on a Computer

Sony's PlayStation 2 game console has entertained players for more than a decade since its release in 2000. With new games still coming out as of 2011, players' memory cards may be getting crowded. Saving the contents of a memory card to a computer can free up space for new saves, as well as providing a stable backup copy should the card become corrupt. Though you can't copy PS2 saves to a computer out of the box, two products to help complete the task.

    • 1

      Insert your PS2 memory card into your PlayStation 2. Attach the USB drive included with the Action Replay Max into one of the USB ports on the front of the console.

      Turn on the PlayStation 2 and insert the Action Replay Max software disc. Close the tray and the program will launch automatically.

      Press the right arrow once on the menu to select the "Max Memory Manager." Press "X" to start the utility.

      Highlight the icon of the memory card containing your saves and press "X" to select it as the primary device.

      Scroll through the list of save files and press "X" to place a check mark by each save you want to copy to your computer. When done selecting all the saves you want, press the right arrow.

      Press the right arrow again to select the "Copy" option, designated by a file cabinet icon. Scroll to the right to highlight the USB drive and press "X" to begin the copy. A progress bar at the top of the screen will track the copy.

      Turn off your PS2 after the copy finishes and remove the USB drive. Insert the USB drive into your computer and place the contained files wherever you want to keep your saves.

      Insert your PS2 memory card and any USB drive into your PlayStation 2. Turn on the system and insert the Codebreaker CD in the drive. The program will launch automatically when you close the tray.

      Use the arrow buttons to scroll to the "Device Manager" option. Select it by pressing "X."

      Press the "X" button to select your memory card as the source device.

      Scroll through the list of available saves and press "X" while highlighting the save you want to copy. Press the right arrow to select the USB drive and press "X" again to copy the file. Repeat this process for each save you want copied.

      Turn off the console when all copies finish transferring. Take the USB drive out of the PS2 and insert it in your computer. Move or copy the save files to wherever you want to keep them on your computer.
