Find the model number of your PS2 Slim console; it is printed on a sticker affixed to the back of the console. Some PS2 Slim models can't play DVD discs. Models SPCH-70011, SPCH-70001CB and SPCH-77001SS can play some form of DVD disc. The model SPCH-70011 can play DVD-ROM discs, SPCH-70001CB can play regular DVD video discs, and model number SPCH-77001SS can play DVD-R and DVD-RW discs.
Remove any game modification devices from the PS2. These types of devices can interfere with the operation of the console software, which can affect its ability to read DVDs. The most common modification device is a mod chip that allows you to play imported games. If you installed one, remove it and then try to play the DVD disc.
Wipe the DVD disc with a lint-free, soft cloth. Smudges, fingerprints and scratches can cause the DVD not to play. Place the cloth in the center of the disc and wipe outward in straight lines. Don't move the cloth in circular motions. If you notice scratches on the DVD, it may need to be replaced.
Play the DVD discs in another PS2 or DVD player. If the discs operate fine, the problem is with your console.
Insert the DVD disc into the PS2 Slim console label side up.
Wipe dust and debris off the PS2 Slim console off with a lint-free cloth. Note the environment and temperature. Excessive dust, steam, extreme temperatures, humidity, smoke and direct sunlight can affect the operation of your console.
Turn off the PS2 Slim console, then turn it back on. Try to play your DVD disc.
Press the "Standby/Reset" button on the front of the console. Select "Browser," and then "Console." Choose "Diagnosis" in the Console screen. Select "On." Insert a DVD. The console will begin the auto-diagnosis feature and make adjustments to read the DVD.
Leave the DVD in the disc tray. Press the "O" button on your PS2 remote twice to go back to the browser screen. Select "Browser." Press the "X" button on your remote to play the DVD.
