How to Make Your PS2 Stop Only Using PS1 Games

Some of the most common glitches users experience with PlayStation 2 consoles are disc read errors. If your console is only playing PlayStation 1 games, it's likely the lens needs a good cleaning, or the console needs a quick reboot. You can also try cleaning the disc, as faulty and dirty disks are not uncommon. Refrain from dismantling the console to correct disc read errors, as this may void the warranty.

Things You'll Need

  • Lint-free cloth
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Lens cleaning disc

Instructions

  1. Clean the disc and console lens

    • 1

Apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol to a lint-free cloth, and scrunch the cloth in your hand to ensure the liquid is spread evenly.

    • 2

Clean the PlayStation 2 gaming disc using straight strokes, moving outward from its center. Do not clean discs in a circular motion, and do not breath or blow on them to remove dirt.

    • 3

Switch on the PlayStation 2, and press the "Eject" button. Place the lens cleaning disc in the console.

    • 4

Allow the lens cleaner to run. When the program is finished, remove the cleaning disc, and replace it with your game. If your console still does not read the disc, move on to Section 2.

    Rebooting the PlayStation 2 console

    • 5

Turn on the console without a disc, and allow the main menu to load. Press the "Triangle" on your control pad, and highlight "Console." Press "Triangle" again over the "Diagnostic" tab, and switch this to "ON."

    • 6

Press the "Eject" button on the console, and insert your PlayStation 2 game disc. Allow the disc to be read in diagnostic mode. Sometimes discs work in Diagnostic mode, but not Normal mode.

    • 7

Let the game run for several minutes before exiting it. Then, reboot your console. Try the game again in normal mode.
