My Slim PS2 Won't Read PS2 Discs

The Slim PlayStation 2 works just the same as the earlier versions of the PS2, it is just a slimmer design. The Slim PS2 can play PlayStation 2 formatted DVD and CD-ROMs, audio CDs and DVD videos. The PS2 can't play burned media discs like CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R or DVD-RW. If you are having trouble playing PS2 formatted discs, there may be a problem with the disc or the console's settings may require adjusting.

Instructions

  1. Basic Troubleshooting

    • 1

Clean the PS2 disc with a lint-free cloth. Sony recommends that you use a cloth made specifically for cleaning discs. Start in the innermost circle of the disc and wipe out to the edge of the disc in a straight line. Don't wipe in a circular motion.

    • 2

Insert the disc into the PS2 disc tray, label-side up. If it still doesn't play, go to Step 3.

    • 3

Insert another PS2 disc into the tray to make sure the issue is not the disc. If the problem is not the disc, run an auto-diagnosis as described in Section 2.

    Auto-Diagnosis

    • 4

Press the "Standby/Reset" button on the front of the PlayStation 2 to turn on the device. The indicator light will turn green.

    • 5

Select "Browser" in the main menu. To select an option, use your navigation arrows to highlight it. Then select it with the "Triangle" button on your PS2 remote control.

    • 6

Select "Diagnosis" from the Browser menu.

    • 7

      Select "On."

    • 8

Insert the PS2 disc that you are having trouble playing into the disc tray. The PS2 will start the auto-diagnosis process. It will make adjustments to allow previously unplayable discs to be played. Repeat the process for additional discs that you are having trouble playing.
