How to Make a PS1 Controller Work on a PS2

If you are still using a Sony PlayStation 2 system, and you have access to an original PlayStation, you may be able to re-purpose a PlayStation 1 controller as an extra controller for your PS2. The only problem will be with first generation PS1 controllers that lack the thumbsticks found on second generation and PS2 controllers. Those controllers may not be able to handle all of the game functions of a PS2 title.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the PlayStation 1 controller into the PlayStation 2 console controller slot.

    • 2

Insert a PlayStation 2 game disc and power on the PS2 console.

    • 3

Press the directional buttons on the left side of the first generation PlayStation 1 controller to see if you are able to play the game with the same functionality as with a PS2 controller. Move the thumbsticks on a second generation PS1 controller to see if the control functions match those of the PS2 controller thumbsticks.
