How to Realign a PS2 Lens

If your PS2 isn't reading game discs properly, the lens is probably misaligned. The lens is an internal component that sits on a metal rod and needs to be in the right place to function correctly. You can realign the lens on your own, but it requires disassembling the unit to access the lens.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your PS2 and unplug the cables from the rear of the console.

    • 2

Turn the PS2 upside down and use the tip of your screwdriver to pop the square pads off each screw on the underside of the console.

    • 3

Remove all screws from the underside of the console.

    • 4

Turn the console right side up and lift the top case off the console by the sides to expose the heat sink and disc drive inside.

    • 5

Remove all screws around the heat sink. This is the square component as big as the disc drive that sits next to the disc drive.

    • 6

Lift the controller port off the front of the heat sink and set it aside.

    • 7

Lift the power plug connector out of its housing at the back of the heat sink and set it aside.

    • 8

Lift the heat sink and disc drive out of the bottom housing. Turn the assembly over to expose the main circuit board underneath.

    • 9

Remove all screws from the top of the main circuit board. Unplug the cables from the side of the board that connect to the side of the disc drive.

    • 10

Remove the disc drive from the board and fan assembly and set it aside.

    • 11

Remove all screws from the sides and top of the disc drive and remove the top cover of the drive. The laser, which is attached to a metal road inside the drive, will now be exposed.

    • 12

Remove the screws at the ends of the metal rod and remove the rod. Loosen the captive screw on the laser unit and remove it from the rod.

    • 13

Replace the laser unit over the groove in the rod and tighten securely. Replace the rod in the disc drive and tighten it securely. Reverse the steps for reassembly of the unit.
