How to Adjust the PS2 Laser Eye

The PlayStation 2 (PS2) uses a laser inside a DVD drive to read video-game and DVD discs. The laser assembly that the laser diode sits upon can become misaligned due to vibrations from the DVD drive's motor, causing the laser to improperly read the discs. In this case you will need to adjust the laser assembly so that the eye of the laser diode is aimed correctly. You will have to partially disassemble the PS2 with a few common tools, but electronic or mechanical abilities are not required.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat 0-edged jeweler's screwdriver
  • Torx screwdriver
  • Phillips jeweler's screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the power cord and any audio or video cables from the PlayStation 2 (PS2). Pull the game controller plug out of the front of the PS2. Remove the game card save cartridge from the slot on the front of the PS2.

    • 2

Place the PS2 on a table face-down with the sticker on the bottom to the right. Insert the tip of a flat-edged screwdriver beneath one of the rubber feet and pull up to dislodge the foot. Pull the rubber foot off. Repeat this procedure on all of the rubber feet on the bottom of the PS2. Repeat this procedure with all of the plastic tabs on the bottom of the PS2. Remove the screws from beneath the rubber feet and the plastic tabs with a Torx screwdriver.

    • 3

Grip the bottom at both sides. Pull the bottom off and place it to the side of the PS2 so that the attached cables do not disconnect.

    • 4

Remove the screws from the four corners of the power supply with a Phillips jeweler's screwdriver; the power supply is the horizontal plate on the right side of the chassis.

    • 5

Lift the power supply up. Insert the tip of a flat-edged screwdriver in the latch beneath the power supply that has a cable plugged in. Lift the tip to release the latch and allow the cable to go free. Remove the power supply and place it aside.

    • 6

Remove the plastic cover on the left side of the PS2 and place it aside. Remove the metal grill that is now revealed on the left side of the PS2 and place it aside.

    • 7

Remove the screws from around the DVD drive with a Torx screwdriver. Lift the drive up and pull the two plugs out of the back. Place the drive face-down on the table.

    • 8

Remove the screws from the side of the drive with a Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Pull the cover off. Pull the front of the DVD tray out so that it is fully extended

    • 9

Locate the lens on the top of the laser module that is near the center of the drive. Remove the screw from the tab holding the lens in position with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Put on a white glove. Remove the lens with your gloved hand. Place the lens aside.

    • 10

Insert the tip of a flat-edged screwdriver beneath the clip on one side of the laser module and the rail the clip is riding on. Lift up on the tip to raise the side of the module. Grip the side of the module with needle-nose pliers. Twist the module to loosen the clip from the rail. Continue twisting the module to loosen the clip on the right side from the rail it is riding on.

    • 11

Remove the laser assembly from the drive. Wipe off the clips with a soft cloth. Blow off the top of the laser module with a blast of compressed air.

    • 12

Place the laser module's left clip back over the left rail on the drive. Align the right clip so that it goes over the right rail. Shift the laser module back and forth a few times to seat it on the rails properly.

    • 13

Place the lens back on the laser module. Place the tab on the module and reattach the screw. Place the cover on the drive and reattach the screws. Push the tray back in. Plug the two cables back into the drive and place the drive back in the PS2 in its original position. Reattach the screws.

    • 14

Reverse the disassembly process to reassemble the PS2. Reattach the power cord and audio and video cables. Plug the controller and the game card save cartridge back into the front of the PS2.
