How to Hook up a PS2 to Surround Sound

The PlayStation 2 is the predecessor to Sony's successful game console the PlayStation. The PlayStation 2 allows players to watch movies, play games and enjoy 5.1 real surround sound. However, not all games and movies will play using 5.1 real surround sound, only games and movies programmed to play surround sound may do so. In any case, setting up the PS2 to play surround sound requires only an optical cable.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure the surround sound system is off and properly connected. Check the connection of each speaker to ensure they are all connected to the surround sound system receiver.

    • 2

      Turn off the PlayStation 2.

    • 3

Remove the red and white cables connected from the television set to the PS2. These cables are used for playing the televisions stereo system, and if left plugged in, will play stereo sounds and not surround sound.

    • 4

Insert the optical cable into the slot designated "Optical Out" on the back of the PlayStation 2.

    • 5

Connect the optical cable into the optical receiver slot on the surround sound system's receiver.

    • 6

      Turn-on your surround sound system.
