What Applications Can You Add to a PS2 With Linux?

Appreciated for its versatility and capacity to be implemented on a wide variety of computer devices ranging from mobile phones to video game consoles, Linux is a prominent operating system that has become one of the most influential open-source projects in computing. For instance, installing Linux on a PS2 game console will essentially turn the console into a desktop computer that is capable of word processing, instant messaging and even surfing the web.
  1. AbiWord

    • AbiWord is a word processor that is similar to classic versions of Microsoft Word. The program supports many of the basic word processing features, such as character formats, spell check and lists, as well more advanced features like headers, foot notes, templates and grammar check.

    Dillo

    • As a basic web browser, Dillo was designed to be used with older, less powerful computer systems. Although the browser has noteworthy speed and is capable of displaying JPEG, GIF and PNG images, it lacks support for JavaScript and Flash and has a hard time displaying webpages with a complex text layout. However, because of its minimalistic requirements, Dillo works well with the Linux operating system on the PS2.

    Fluxbox

    • Fluxbox is a floating window manager that allows users to manipulate multiple desktop elements by way of a taskbar and pop-up menu. Because the application uses little memory, it has a quick load time and is compatible with Linux on the PS2.

    Pidgin

    • Pidgin is an instant messaging program for Linux that includes standard features like chat logging, contact lists and formatting tools. While Pidgin does not support folder sharing, it is able perform limited file transfers that can be paused, resumed and canceled.

    Mozilla Suite

    • Mozilla Suite is a compilation of several programs that include Mozilla Composer (a web developing tool), Mozilla Mail (email), Chatzilla (an IRC client that can act as an instant messenger) and Navigator (a web browser). Even though Mozilla Suite is substantially larger than many other Linux applications, it still compiles successfully on a PS2 running Linux.
