The console and TV should both be plugged in and turned on.

The cables between the console and TV should be firmly connected.

There should be a controller connected to the PS2.

There should be a game disc or DVD in the PS2.

The disc should be free of dirt and scratches.

Instructions

  1. Picture is missing or fuzzy

    • 1

Make sure that the television is tuned to the proper station.

    • 2

Check the A/V cables on another television to make sure that they work. Replace them if needed.

    • 3

Check all connections for dirt or dust. Clean them with a dust-free cloth and canned air if needed.

    • 4

Connect the PS2 directly to the TV. If the signal is passing through a VCR or DVD recorder, anti-copy software may be interfering with the video signal.

    Bad or no sound

    • 5

Check that the volume on the TV is not on mute and is turned up.

    • 6

Make sure that the A/V cables are plugged in to the proper input on the television. Adjust them if needed. If a stereo or other audio device is being used, make sure that it is set to the correct setting.

    • 7

Check the A/V cables on another television to make sure that they work. Replace them if needed.

    • 8

Go to the System Configuration menu and set "Digital Out" to On.

    Controller Issues

    • 9

Check to make sure the controller is compatible with the game. A DUALSHOCK 2 game will not play properly with a DUALSHOCK controller. The correct controller can be determined in the game's instructions.

    • 10

Check the connection on both ends (controller and console) for dirt or dust. Clean if needed.

    • 11

Try a different controller. If the new one works, the old one is broken.

    Memory Card issues

    • 12

Make sure the memory card is made for the PS2 and is properly plugged into the console.

    • 13

Determine if there is enough free space on the card. If there is not, you will be unable to save data. Delete some old data from the Browser menu or use a new, empty card.

    • 14

Check the card and console socket for dirt or dust. Clean if needed.

    • 15

Try using another memory card. If it works, the original card is damaged and must be replaced.
