How to Boot CD-R Games on a PS2

The PlayStation 2 (PS2) game console can be adapted to play copies of legally owned games, provided they have been burned onto a recordable CD-R disk. To play the CD-R, a "swap" disk program is needed. The swap disk starts the PS2 playing and is then replaced with the CD-R. There are a number of swap disk program disks that can be purchased, such as Swap Magic, Swap Coder and Swap Magic Plus (see Resources). These all operate in the same manner to enable the PS2 to play the CD-R. The PS2 will suffer no harm from playing the CD-R, and any warranty in place will remain intact.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the PS2 on. Press the "Eject" button on the front. Place a swap disk program disk onto the disk tray. Press the "Eject" button to close the disk tray.

    • 2

Wait for the screen to display a "Load Program" message on the screen.

    • 3

Press and hold in the "Eject" button until the power light changes from green to orange. Release the "Eject" button.

    • 4

Wait as the disk tray ejects. Remove the swap disk program disk from the tray. Place the CD-R disk onto the tray.

    • 5

Wait a few seconds for the disk tray to close itself. The CD-R disk will now load onto the PS2.
