How to Mod a New PS2 Slim

The PlayStation 2 Slim (PS2) is a more compact version of the original game console. Like the original, the PS2 Slim can not play backup copies of legally owned titles until you modify (or ̶0;mod̶1;) it. Make a PS2 slide tool that will let you mod the PS2 Slim without having to open it up--voiding any warranty that might be in place. The slide tool modification requires a few household items but no special tools or materials. Once done, you can use the slim tool to enable the PS2 Slim to play backup copies of games while the original remains safely placed away.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a sheet of newspaper on a table to protect the surface. Place the old credit card on the newspaper vertically. Place a strip of cellophane tape on the left side and bottom of the credit card to hold it to the newspaper.

    • 2

Measure a 1/2-inch across from the bottom left corner of the credit card. Draw a 2-1/2-inch line up the right side on the credit card with the magic marker. Draw a 1/2-inch line across to the right at the 2-1/2-inch mark with the magic marker. Draw a line up to the top of the credit card from the 1/2-inch mark with the magic marker.

    • 3

Cut out the lines just drawn with the blade of the utility knife.

    • 4

Measure 1 inch across the top from the upper right corner of the credit card. Make a dot at the 1-inch mark with the magic marker. Measure 3 inches up from the bottom left corner of the credit card. Make a dot at the 3-inch mark with the magic marker.

    • 5

Draw an outward arc between the two dots. Cut out the arc with the blade of the utility knife. Remove the cellophane tape from the credit card.

    • 6

Smooth the edges of the credit card with the sandpaper. Dispose of the cut out pieces of plastic in the trash.

    • 7

Turn on the PS2 Slim. Eject the disc tray and place a PS1 game disc on the disc tray. Close the disc tray to start the game playing.

    • 8

Insert the hooked end of the slide tool into the left corner of the disc slot once the PS1's game menu appears on the screen. Move the Slide Tool all the way to the right. Pull the slide tool towards you to eject the disc tray.

    • 9

Remove the PS1 game. Place a backup copy of a PS2 game on the disc tray. Push the disc tray back into the PS2 using the slide tool.

    • 10

Move the slide tool all the way to the left. Remove the slide tool from the PS2. Press the ̶0;X̶1; button on the PS2 controller to start up the backup of the PS2 game.
