Things You'll Need
Instructions
Determine the best mod chip for your PS2 Slim. Some mod chips must be soldered in place, while others offer solder-free installation. There are dozens of mod chips available, so spend some time deciding which chip is best for your needs.
Disconnect the power cable from your PS2. Remove any controllers and memory cards from the console. Lay the console face down on a table with the front facing you.
Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry up the six rubber screw covers on the bottom of the console. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws. One of the case screws is hidden under the warranty label. Turn the console over and carefully pry up and remove the top cover.
Remove the screw holding the metal shielding and motherboard assembly. The screw is located between the two memory card ports. Once the screw is removed, lift the entire internal assembly up and out of the PS2's bottom case.
Remove the two screws holding the cooling fan in place. Lift the fan up and disconnect the cable from the motherboard.
Disconnect the four screws holding the metal shielding in place. The optical drive is also part of the shielding, so you will be removing the entire assembly. Disconnect the optical drive's ribbon cable from the motherboard. Lift the metal shielding/optical drive assembly up and off of the motherboard, revealing another metal plate on top of the motherboard.
Carefully pry the second metal plate off of the motherboard. There are no screws to remove, so just use gentle pressure to lift the plate up and off of the motherboard. You now have access to the motherboard and can install your mod chip.
Install your mod chip according to the directions that accompanied it. Different mod chips have different installation instructions, and several are installed in different locations. Read the manual that came with your mod chip thoroughly before installing.
Once you have installed your mod chip, reassemble your PS2 Slim by reversing the previous steps.
