Instructions
Check the disc. If you get a "disc read error" message or the PlayStation 2 does not recognize the disc, there may be dirt or particulates on it. Run the disc under cold running water to remove large particles and wipe it down softly with a lint free cloth to remove sticky substances.
Cycle the power. Another reason the system might fail to recognize your PlayStation 2 game disc is that the console's laser eye is not receiving adequate power. This is a common problem with older "phat" PlayStation 2 models, and can only be temporarily solved by unplugging the system, plugging it back in and then trying again. Unfortunately, once this problem starts it will continue, and the console will eventually need to be replaced.
Cool the system down. If the PlayStation 2 feels hot to the touch, the error could be generated by an overheating issue. Turn the system off completely and let it cool until it feels room temperature. Then turn it back on and retry the disc. Consider moving the console to an area where air circulates freely to avoid this issue in the future.
Check for other technical issues using the PS2's diagnostic system. This system will detect whether the disc read error is due to a faulty hardware component, like the disc tray or laser eye. Turn the PlayStation 2 on with no disc inserted, and then go to the browser menu. Select "System" followed by "Diagnosis" and then press X. When prompted, insert the disc that you were having trouble with. If there is a problem with the hardware, information will be displayed on the screen. If not, a "system normal" message will be displayed.
