How to Use a Flash Drive as Memory Card PS2

The PlayStation 2 (PS2) uses a specially constructed memory card for storing game data and other information. You can increase the storage capacity of a PS2 memory card by replacing its electronics with those from a larger-capacity flash drive. The procedure is straightforward and requires a few tools commonly found around the house. Adult supervision is required since a soldering iron must be used.

Things You'll Need

  • Soft cloth
  • Phillips jeweler's screwdriver
  • Flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver
  • Portable drill
  • Sanding drill head
  • Soldering iron
  • Solder
  • Duct tape

Instructions

    • 1

Place a soft cloth on a table to protect its contents. Place the PS2 memory card on the soft cloth with the label facing up and the screws at the bottom. Remove the two screws with the Philips jeweler's screwdriver. Slide the top of the case away from you to remove it from the bottom case.

    • 2

Insert the tip of the Philips jeweler's screwdriver beneath the circuit board that is inside the case. Lift up on the tip to loosen the circuit board from the case. Pull the circuit board up and out of the case. Place the circuit board on the soft cloth.

    • 3

Heat up the soldering iron. Apply the tip of the soldering iron to the four contacts on the circuit board attached to the memory connector. Keep applying heat until the memory connector can be pulled off from the circuit board with your fingers. Dispose of the circuit board in the trash. Place the memory connector aside for later.

    • 4

Remove the grooves from inside the PS3 memory card's bottom case with the sanding drill head of the portable drill. Blow out the bottom case.

    • 5

Place the flash drive vertically on the soft cloth with the USB connector facing away from you.

    • 6

Insert the tip of the Philips jeweler's screwdriver into the top left corner seam between the two cases that compose the flash drive. Push the tip down the length of the drive. Repeat this on the right side and on the top and bottom of the drive.

    • 7

Pull the two cases of the flash drive apart. Remove the circuit board that has the USB connector attached to it out of the case.

    • 8

Hold the flash drive circuit board so that the side that has the USB connector on it is facing up. Place the flash drive circuit board on the bottom PS2 memory case with the USB connector facing toward you. Tape the circuit board onto the case with strips of duct tape.

    • 9

Insert the tip of the flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver into the gap between the USB connector and the circuit board. Pull up on the tip of thescrewdriver to break the USB connector off the circuit board. Dispose of the USB connector in the trash.

    • 10

Place the memory connector in the position that was just occupied by the USB connector. Position the four pins that have solder on them against the four contacts at the end of the circuit board. Touch the tip of the soldering iron to each of the four pins so that they adhere to the contacts on the circuit board. Let the solder cool for two minutes.

    • 11

Slide the top of the case back onto the PS2 memory card. Reattach the screws. Unplug the soldering iron.
