How to Fix Disc Read Error on PS2 Console

The PlayStation 2 system can play several types of disc based media, including games, DVD movies and audio CDs. Occasionally, when you're attempting to play a disc, a "Disc Read Error" message may be displayed. There are several reasons why this error might occur, including dirty or scratched discs and problems with the PlayStation 2's disc-reading hardware.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure you are using a disc that is compatible with the PlayStation 2 system. All models of the console play PlayStation 1 and 2 games, DVDs and CDs. Some models also play recordable media, such as CD-R or DVD-RW.

    • 2

Clean the disc that causes the error message to display. Inspect the disc for dirt or fingerprints, and use a soft, clean cloth to remove them. Wipe the disc gently to avoid scratching it.

    • 3

Check the disc for scratches. Fine scratches may be polished out, but larger, jagged scratches are usually not repairable.

    • 4

Clean any dust or dirt from the console, and place it on a hard, level surface away from the floor. Do not set the console on the carpet, as this can cause overheating and malfunction.

    • 5

Try other discs with the PlayStation 2. If other discs work, this indicates that the non-functioning disc is either damaged or dirty. If no other discs work, this indicates a probable hardware failure.
