How to Modify a PlayStation 2 Slim

If you want to unlock or "mod" your PlayStation 2 (PS2) Slim video-game console for the purpose of playing games and media that weren&'t designed for it, the accepted thinking is that you need to use a mod chip. But modding the PS2 Slim can be done in another way that doesn&'t involve a chip. You can open up the device yourself and mod it without adding any electronics. And the best part is that it takes very little time.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your PS2 and unplug the cables from the back of the unit. Unplug the controllers from the ports on the front.

    • 2

Turn your PS2 upside-down and use the tip of the screwdriver to pop the seven rubber screw covers off of the screws. Set the screw covers aside.

    • 3

Use your screwdriver to remove the seven screws on the underside of the unit and set them aside.

    • 4

Turn the unit right-side up and lift the top case off to reveal the internal components, including the disk drive.

    • 5

Locate the circular sensor in the back of the disk drive, near the wall of the PS2, and place a small strip of electrical tape over it.

    • 6

Turn the top case of the PS2 over and tape a small wad of tissue paper over the sensor located in the bottom left corner of the underside of the case.

    • 7

Replace the top cover and the seven screws on the bottom of the unit and you are done. These steps will eliminate all restrictions on the kinds of discs your PS2 Slim can play.
