Unlike the Microsoft Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii, all of the versions of the Sony PlayStation 3 or PS3 are not compatible with the games of its predecessor, the PlayStation 2. However, if you own an 80 gigabyte PlayStation 3, there is a good chance that your PS3 has the ability to play PS2 games. PS3 systems with a specific serial number will have the ability to play PS2 games. Additionally, if your PS3 cannot play PS2 games from the disc, you still have the option of getting some PS2 games from the PlayStation Store.
