How to Fix the Ribbon Cable in the PS2

The five-pin ribbon cable in the PlayStation 2 is a long, white cable that runs from the "Eject/Rest" button of the PS2 to the console's main internal system board. This ribbon cable is relatively sturdy but is prone to damage, especially when you are disassembling or working on the console. If your ribbon cable is damaged, open up your PS2 and fix it yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your PS2 and unplug all A/V cables and controllers from the front and back of the device. Turn the PSP upside down.

    • 2

Use the tip of your screwdriver to pop off the eight square screw covers from the underside of the device. Remove the screws.

    • 3

Turn the PS2 right side up and lift the top case of the unit up from the sides to remove it. Turn the top case over and set it down right next to the body of the PS2, as the two pieces are still connected via the ribbon cable.

    • 4

Use your fingers to remove the "Reset/Eject" assembly from the corner of the top case of the unit.

    • 5

Use your fingers to secure the end of the ribbon cable where it connects to the assembly. Make sure it is securely plugged in and not loose. If this doesn't fix the problem, inspect the other end of the ribbon cable, where it connects to the PS2.

    • 6

Use the soldering iron to resolder the ribbon cable wherever it may have come attached from its connectors on the body of the PS2. Let the solder cool for a moment. Reassemble your PS2 in the reverse order you took it apart.
