How to Fix a Broken Playstation Controller

The PlayStation game console controller is a little more sophisticated than other video game controllers in the sense that it comes with features such as a shock simulator. So if one of these internal components becomes damaged, it can affect the controller as a whole. The good news is that if you have a malfunctioning or broken controller, you can disassemble and fix it yourself. It will take a little time and concentration but the process is fairly straightforward.

Things You'll Need

  • Small Phillips screwdriver
  • Small pieces of paper
  • Oil

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug your controller from the PlayStation game console and turn the controller over.

    • 2

Use your Phillips screwdriver to remove the six screws located on the back of the controller. Four screws are on the back of the handles and the other two are in the middle.

    • 3

Use your fingers to separate the back half of the controller from the front half. Set the back half of the controller aside.

    • 4

Use your fingers to remove the green electrical board from the front housing of the controller. Set the electrical board aside and you are left with the buttons.

    • 5

Remove the rubber connector pads from the rear of the plastic buttons. If the problem with your controller is with the buttons, place a small piece of paper behind the actual button and replace the rubber guard. This will improve the button sensors and the connection to the circuit board. If the problem is with the black analog sticks on the controller, proceed to step 6.

    • 6

Pull the analog sticks gently up and they will disconnect from the electrical board. Place one or two drops of oil over the analog stick connectors at the base of the electrical board and then replace the analog sticks. Reassemble your controller in the reverse order you took it apart and you're done.
