How to Adjust the PS2 Lens on a Slim PS2

The PS2 Slim is a thinner version of the popular game console. Like a regular PS2, the Slim plays game discs similar to CDs, and like a CD player the PS2 uses a laser to read the information on the disc. It's not uncommon for this laser to become dirty or slip out of place over time. If this is the case with your Slim, your screen is probably freezing up every time you try to play a game on it. But you'll be pleased to know that you can open up your Slim and adjust the lens until it works like new.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your PS2 Slim and unplug any cables from the back of the device. Then turn your Slim upside down.

    • 2

Use the tip of your Phillips screwdriver to pop the six rubbers covers off of the bottom of the device. Then remove the six screws and set them aside.

    • 3

Turn the unit right-side up and remove the top half of the unit with your fingers. The internal components of the Slim will now be exposed in the bottom half of the unit.

    • 4

Locate the square silver laser assembly in the lower part of the Slim housing. There is a thin metal rod attached to the assembly with two clips holding it in place. Use your screwdriver to remove the screws holding these clips in place. Then set the clips aside.

    • 5

Slide the laser assembly forward and lift it out of the housing. Then slide it back in the PS2 unit and replace the screws and clips, making sure they are tight and secure on the metal rod. Your PS2 Slim lens is now adjusted.
