How to Clean a PS2 Laser

The PlayStation 2's laser, used to read game discs so you are able to play them, is very fragile. The laser can stop working if too much dust collects on it or it gets scratched. You will have to take the PS2 apart if the laser stops working. If the laser gets scratched, you are going to have to replace it; but if it's just dirty, all you may have to do to fix it is a simple cleaning.

Things You'll Need

  • Cross-point screwdriver
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Watchmaker's cross-point screwdriver
  • Isopropyl alcohol
  • Cotton balls

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug your PlayStation 2 from its wall outlet. Remove the PlayStation 2 cover screws: Using a cross-point screwdriver, start with the two bigger screws on the back of the console. On the bottom of the PlayStation are four little rubber squares and four little plastic squares. Remove these with the flat-blade screwdriver to uncover the remaining screws, and take the screws out. Place all screws in a safe place like a bowl or a cup.

    • 2

Pull the shell off the PlayStation. Start by pulling off the stickers on the back; doing so is necessary but will void the warranty. Then starting from the back, pull up on the cover, and it should lift off.

    • 3

Remove the four screws that are holding the cover down on the CD drive. You will need the watchmaker's cross-point screwdriver to remove these small screws. Remove the cover on the CD drive. The laser is a small circular lens that is only 1 or 2 cm in diameter.

    • 4

Soak the cotton balls you are using in isopropyl alcohol. Carefully and softly rub the cotton balls on the lens in a circular motion. Only rub the lens for a few seconds as you might damage it.

    • 5

Start with the four screws for the CD drive when putting your PlayStation back together. Put the cover back on the PlayStation, screw back in the eight screws and reinsert the rubber and plastic squares.
