How to Fix & Clean a PS2 Slim Model

The Sony PlayStation 2 Slim is the company's final iteration of their PlayStation 2 family of consoles. The machine uses a smaller chipset to provide a reduced footprint and adds a modified quieter fan for improved DVD viewing performance. If your PS2 Slim is not performing at its best, the console may require a quick cleaning and tune-up. This will allow you to continue to enjoy the machine's large game and DVD library.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug all cables and controllers from the console and cycle the power switch (flick it on and off several times) to discharge any remaining charge.

    • 2

Fix overheating and disc read errors by moving the PS2 Slim to a cool, well-ventilated area free from dust, moisture or direct sunlight.

    • 3

Clean the outside of the console using a clean, lint-free cloth damp with rubbing alcohol. Get into all the ridges of the machine to achieve an overall clean surface.

    • 4

Ensure the console's self-cooling system is running correctly by cleaning out the air vents and fan port with a new, clean toothbrush. Built-up dust and lint in these areas will cause overheating and reduce the machine's disc-reading capabilities.

    • 5

Open the disc tray and clean the laser head by lightly rubbing with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to ensure best disc-reading performance. Wipe the rest of the disc tray down with the cloth to prevent scratched discs.
