Opening the PS2
Remove all of the cables attached to the PS2, including the game pad controllers.
Put the beach towel on a work surface. Put the PS2 facedown on the beach towel.
Insert the tip of the flat-edged screwdriver beneath the rubber foot on the bottom of the PS2 at the upper right-hand corner. Wiggle the tip of the flat-edged screwdriver to loosen the rubber foot.
Pull the rubber foot off the PS2 with the pliers.
Repeat this procedure with the other three rubber feet that are on the bottom of the PS2 at each corner.
Insert the tip of the flat-edged screwdriver beneath one of the two plastic nubs on the bottom of the PS2 at its middle. Wiggle the tip of the flat-edged screwdriver to loosen the plastic nub. Pull the plastic nub off with your fingers.
Repeat this procedure to remove the other plastic nub that is on the bottom of the PS2 at its middle.
Remove the screws that were under the rubber feet and the plastic nubs with the Phillips screwdriver.
Remove the two screws from the left and right side of the game pad controller port panel with the Phillips screwdriver.
Rotate the PS2 so that the power cord port is facing you. Slice through the black plastic tape at the PS2's edge by the power cord port with a blade of the scissors.
Turn the PS2 over on the beach towel. Lift the top case from off of the PS2 with your hands. Put the top case down on the beach towel.
Rotate the PS2 so that the rectangular metal DVD drive is facing you. Remove the screws from the left and right side of the DVD drive with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver.
Lift the DVD drive out of the PS2 with your left hand. Pull the two cables out from the back of the DVD drive with the fingers of your right hand. Put the DVD drive facedown on the beach towel.
Cleaning the DVD Drive's Laser Lens
Pull the disc tray out of the DVD drive with your fingers.
Remove the screws from both sides of the DVD drive with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver.
Lift the DVD drive case off the DVD with the fingers of your right hand. Put the DVD drive case on the beach towel.
Remove the screws from both sides of the laser assembly that is at the center of the DVD drive with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. The laser assembly has a mirror on it reflecting light that makes it easy to locate.
Wiggle the sides of the laser assembly free of the two rails it is riding on. Pull the laser assembly off the DVD drive.
Put the laser assembly on the beach towel. Remove the screws on each side of the metal bracket lying on top of the laser assembly with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver.
Pull the metal bracket off the laser assembly with your fingers. Put the metal bracket on the beach towel.
Blow off the laser assembly with compressed air.
Moisten one end of a cotton swab in the rubbing alcohol. Gently wipe the laser lens that is seated next to the mirror using a slow, circular motion.
Wipe off the laser lens with an edge of the lint-free photographic tissue using a slow, circular motion.
Blow off the laser assembly with compressed air.
Put the metal bracket back on the laser assembly. Reattach the screws.
Place the laser assembly back onto the two rails on the DVD drive.
Push the disc tray back into the DVD drive. Put the DVD case back onto the DVD drive. Reattach the screws
Attach the two cables to the back of the DVD drive. Put the DVD drive back onto the PS2 in its original position. Reattach the screws.
Put the top case back onto the PS2. Turn the PS2 over. Reattach the screws to the bottom of the PS2. Reattach the screws to the sides of the game pad controller port panel.
Turn the PS2 over. Reattach the cables to the PS2, including the game pad controllers.
